The sand dollar is an invertebrate of the family Echinoderms. When living, the sand dollar is covered with small thin spines, less than 1/8 of an inch long. Sand dollars tend to grow to 2-4 inches in diameter. The sand dollar is shaped like a disk, relatively round, and thicker in the middle than on the edges. The sand dollar features a five sided symmetry. The sand dollar has 5 somewhat oval areas radiating from its center. The sand dollar appears to be made up of many small plates. There is a mouth opening in the underside of the sand dollar (not shown).
