Alternate Media Center

Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS) provides alternate media for students with verified disabilities for required textbooks, course materials, exams, other print materials, and video tapes. The Alternate Media Center can convert print documents to electronic text such as Microsoft Word files, to Braille, or to computer generated speech files such as MP3's. Diagrams and figures can be embossed to allow people with vision limitations to feel the images. Closed captions can be added to video tapes to allow people with hearing impairments to read what is spoken. DSPS Support Services has volunteers who read text books aloud and record them onto audio tape. Visit the Alternate Formats page for more information.

The Alternate Media Center features a high-speed scanner and optical character recognition software; text to audio and text to braille conversion programs; braille and tactile diagram embossers; CD burners; and equipment for closed captioning video tapes.

Kelly Whitten , the Alternate Media Facilitator, works with faculty who have students with disabilities, to make sure the students receive class handouts in alternate formats at the same time the other students receive their handouts. The Alternate Media Facilitator also works with faculty and staff to increase the accessibility of web pages and distance learning courses.

The Alternate Media Center is located in room 3328 in the new High Tech Center. You are welcome to drop by, send an e-mail or call me at extension 2825.
