Instructor Guidelines for Choosing a Notetaker
Occasionally an instructor is asked to assist in locating a competent student
volunteer to serve as a notetaker for a student with a disability. The following
guidelines for instructors are suggested to minimize the time involved and to
assist in selecting skilled notetakers.
If you have any questions or if a notetaker is
not available, please contact DSPS Support Services office.
- After a DSPS Specialist or Counselor has authorized a notetaking assistant,
the SLO Campus DSPS Support Services Assistant or North County Campus (NCC) DSPS Program Assistant
will contact you and identify the student that needs a notetaker.
- Please announce, without mentioning the student’s name, that a volunteer is needed to
take notes for another student. Please be discreet as identifying a disabled student during
class may be embarrassing to that student. Try to identify students who are organized, write
legibly, and are skilled notetakers. Also, when making the announcement, stress the
importance of taking good notes.
- After announcing the need for a notetaker, ask potential notetakers and the DSPS student
to meet with you briefly after class so you can introduce the two students to each other. The
students will make their own arrangements for sharing notes. Both student and notetaker need to
immediately contact DSPS Support Services Assistant.
If needed, DSPS will help train the notetakers. A copy machine is available in the Support
Services office to duplicate notes (free of charge). If the notes need to be exchanged immediately
after class, the student needing notes may request a NCR tablet through our office or purchase a
tablet at the college bookstore. DSPS Support Services strives to make this process as simple as
possible for the instructor, student, and notetaker.
