Academic Accommodations

The law states that some students with disabilities have a right to academic accommodations.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 states that:

No qualified handicapped student shall, on the basis of handicap, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or otherwise be subjected to discrimination under any...post-secondary education program or activity.

Section 56002 of the California Code of Regulations (1993) defines a "Student with a Disability":

A "Student with a Disability" is a person enrolled at a community college who  has a verified impairment which limits one or more major life activities and  which imposes an educational limitation.

Accommodations are changes to how things are normally done which provide students with disabilities an equal opportunity to participate in and enjoy the benefits of education. In order to comply with Section 504 and Title 5 and to guarantee the civil rights of students with disabilities, Cuesta College provides services and instruction to accommodate the needs of Cuesta College students with documented disabilities. Accommodations include:

• changes to a classroom environment or task;
• removal of architectural barriers;
• modifications to policies, practices or procedures; and
• provision of appropriate auxiliary aids and services;
• alternative testing;
• recorded or braille texts and other instructional materials;
• use of adapted equipment such as amplification devices or adapted computers; and
• sign language interpreters, notetakers or scribes.

If a student believes they are not receiving appropriate services or accommodations or are being discriminated against, there is a grievance procedure available.
