Course Substitution/Waiver Procedure

Those students whose learning disability assessments demonstrate that with academic adjustments (reasonable accommodations) their disability should not preclude success in a particular course or subject area OR those students whose assessments indicate course success, even with accommodations, is unpredictable should follow Level I.

Level I

  1. The student must have a verified disability that affects his/her achievement in the course or subject area in which he/she intends to apply for a course substitution/waiver.
  2. If the student believes he/she may be eligible for a substitution/waiver, the student should meet with his/her Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS) specialist to determine whether he/she should apply for a course substitution/waiver. The DSPS specialist will give the student the Petition for Substitution/Waiver of Associate Degree or Certificate Requirements Based on Verified Disability. It is recommended that the student thoroughly discuss the petition and the process with his/her specialist.
  3. The student must complete the student section of the Petition for Substitution/Waiver of Associate Degree or Certificate Requirements Based on Verified Disability. When the student section has been completed with all supporting documents attached, the student should meet with his/her DSPS disability specialist, and then with the DSPS academic counselor. The petition will then be forwarded to the DSPS Director for approval. The student may expect to be notified of the approval/disapproval decision in regards to the petition within 20 working days.
  4. In order to present a well documented case, the student should follow the suggestions set forth in Good Faith Effort with Accommodations Documentation.
  5. The student should meet with his/her instructor during office hours to receive help in regard to how to study for exams, how to study the text, how to improve poor test performance, clarifying difficult concepts, etc. It is advisable for the student to keep a written log of the dates and times that he/she has met with his/her instructor and what was discussed.
  6. If the student withdraws from the course, it should be by the 12th week of the semester. The instructor should be consulted to determine (based on the student’s current grades and performance in the course) that he/she has very little chance of getting a grade of "C" or higher in the course if he/she were to complete the course. The student is advised to keep a written log of all test, quiz and homework grades and the dates received, and save all returned work (homework, tests, quizzes) in a folder. It is advisable for the student to obtain written documentation from his/her instructor that he/she has met these criteria.

Those students whose assessments show their disability is an insurmountable barrier to their ability to succeed in a class or subject area should follow Level II.
